Blog #6: Historical Technological Communication

When it comes to technologies throughout history some interesting things that I have learned are about drones. I found their political use to interesting because its in a morally grey area in terms of if the government should use them or not. Some people a in support of drones because they're cheaper than sending humans and provide surveillance in extremely dangerous areas. Others believe that the drones should not be used by the government because they're not always accurate and very secretive. A good example of this is the incident where the government mistook someone else for a facilitator for the Islamic state. This caused the death of the targeted Zemari Ahmadi and 7 children all apart of his family. I learned the main difference between drones and unnamed aerial vehicles is that drones do not have a operator and UAVs do.

Another technology that I learned about was the telegraph. This was created in 1837 by Samuel Morse who wanted to provide a more effective method of communication. The first message written on the telegraph by Morse in the supreme court in which he wrote the phrase "What hath God wrought" to his assistant Alfred Vail. I also learned that the concept of morse code originated from telegraphs since they used dots and dashes as a means of translating text. Bluetooth was created in 1994 by Haartsen and Ericsson. Furthermore, Bluetooth allows different devices to paired through radio signals. The name Bluetooth is significant because its meaning originates from King Harald Bluetooth who united Denmark and Norway One fact that I found surprising was that Bluetooth quickly rose to popularity mainly because it lacked competition within the technology industry.

Petroglyphs are known as ancient carvings in rock used to represent a message. Moreover, these are significant because they were known as the earliest form of communication reaching back to 14,800 years ago. These have Native American origins which are prevalent in the symbols used; some examples different symbol meanings include bear paws = strength, arrows = direction, antelope = decisive action, etc.
